Why this technique exists

Hostile messages beg for the reply that makes everything worse.

When an email attacks your character, your competence, or your decisions, the instinct is to defend, correct, and counter. That reply becomes ammunition, and the thread grows. A BIFF Response® does the opposite: it answers with something Brief, Informative, Friendly, and Firm, gives the other person nothing to grab onto, and usually ends the exchange.

What you'll learn

Outcomes you'll bring back from BIFF Response® (Email & Text).

  • Write a BIFF Response® using the 4-step process.
  • Recognize Blamespeak and stop rewarding it with reactions.
  • Calm even the most volatile written hostility without giving ground.
  • Keep replies brief so they end threads instead of feeding them.
  • Stay friendly and firm at the same time (the combination that works).
  • Coach clients, colleagues, and family members to write their own BIFF replies.
