The Brain 101: Effective Client Communication
What are your clients actually capable of taking in, and when? This course walks legal professionals through six parts of the brain and two coaching styles, explaining what clients may be capable or incapable of, and what lawyers should do (and avoid doing) to communicate effectively with their clients' brains.

You're advising a brain, not a file.
Clients under stress miss information, distort meaning, and turn defensive at exactly the moments their decisions matter most. Understanding a handful of structures (the hemispheres, the amygdala, mirror neurons) and how your coaching style triggers defensiveness or openness tells you when your advice will land and when it can't.
Outcomes you'll bring back from The Brain 101.
- Understand the brain structures that shape client communication, from neurons to the triune brain.
- Distinguish right-hemisphere and left-hemisphere responses in stressed clients.
- Talk to the right brain first to calm defensiveness, then deliver the analysis.
- Recognize how the amygdala drives fear responses in legal settings.
- Account for the lasting communication impact of childhood trauma and abuse.
- Understand mirror neurons and how your own state transmits to clients.
- Apply polyvagal theory basics to keep hard conversations regulated.
- Use the coaching style that inspires openness to change instead of defensiveness.
